PLAYER-SELECTION GUIDE

A short run of strong or quiet performances does not tell the whole story. Look for the context behind the numbers.

Check what changed

Has the player's batting position, bowling responsibility or place in the team changed? A role change can affect opportunity more than one recent score.

Compare like with like

Consider the format, opposition and conditions when looking at recent performances. A player's T20 role may differ from their role in another format.

Use data as one input

Statistics can help frame a decision, but they cannot predict what will happen next. Pair performance information with current team news and the contest rules. For conditions, compare the latest venue notes with our pitch guide.

Avoid treating a small sample of matches as a guarantee. Use reliable, current information and make your own assessment.

Selection checklist

  • Is the player expected to be in the playing XI?
  • What role are they likely to have in this match?
  • Are the conditions and opposition relevant to the comparison?
  • Does the selection fit the contest's limits?
